The Karnataka government official Smt. Uma Mahadevan IAS, Additional Chief Secretary andDevelopment Commissioner, attended the Congress and addressed the audience on the efforts ofthe state government in tackling solid waste management in rural areas. She emphasized the criticalrole women have played in transforming local waste management systems and creating
opportunities for clean livelihoods through innovative policies. What started as a problem in the ruralarea has turned into an entrepreneurial opportunity and empowerment of rural women. The state
committed to making rural solid waste management inclusive of all vulnerable communities
“We realize that having the poorest women, the elderly, and women with disabilities do the dirty workof segregating waste wasn’t acceptable,” said Mahadevan. She shared that the Karnatakagovernment developed a scheme in which Gram Panchayats sign agreements with local women’s
groups to take on waste management, with women being trained in various aspects, including wastesegregation, user fee collection, and even driving waste collection vehicles.
She highlighted a significant milestone: “Three years ago, we had zero women driving wastecollection vehicles. Today, I’m happy to say 3,400 women are driving, and over 15,400 cleanlivelihoods have been created.”
Mahadevan also acknowledged the support from Hasiru Dala and other organizations in thesuccess of these initiatives. Along with our governmental training institutes MGI and SIRD, we have
had amazing support from Nalini Shekar and the entire Hasiru Dala team, she noted, praising theircontributions to waste management and sustainability efforts in Karnataka.
